What is a Hard Refresh?
A hard refresh will clear the stored content and make the browser load the latest version of the webpage.
Why do I need to hard refresh my browser cache?
Many of our clients notice that when we make updates, the changes don't show up until they do a hard refresh.
This happens because the browser is showing a cached version. To fix this, a hard refresh clears the cache and reloads the updated content. It's easy to do, though the steps depend on your browser and operating system.
How to Perform a Hard Refresh in Different Browsers
Depending on your browser and operating system, the key combinations for performing a hard refresh may vary. Here’s how to do it on the most popular browsers:
Google Chrome (Windows/Linux)
Hold down Ctrl on your keyboard.
While holding Ctrl, press the F5 key or click the Reload button (a circular arrow in the address bar).
Google Chrome (macOS)
Hold down Cmd (⌘).
While holding Cmd (⌘), press Shift and then R.
Safari (macOS)
Hold down Cmd (⌘).
Press Option (⌥) and then R.
Hard Refresh vs. Clearing Cache
A hard refresh only clears the cache for the webpage you’re currently viewing. If you want to clear all cached files for all websites, you need to clear the cache through your browser’s settings.
